WWE Tickets Donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters

Ticket Donations help mentors bring their "Littles" to events

Thanks to a generous donation from the SMG American Bank Canter, several of our matches  were in attendance for the WWE Supershow Saturday when it came to Corpus Christi on October 22. American Bank Center has supported Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout the years by making similar donations for a variety of different shows.

Big Brother Jesse Dolin, pictured with Little Brother John (left), has been matched for nearly two years, and this was the first time they were able to attend an event at the American Bank Center together.

Big Brother Matt Teifke has been matched with Little Brother Dominic for seven months and have attended Ice Rays hockey games as well as Disney On Ice. "This was our first time attending a WWE event", said Matt. "We would not have been able to do so but we are here thanks to these tickets from American Bank Center".

Finding activities to do in the evening that are family oriented and affordable has been a challenge for Big Sister Ana Hernandez who works during the day. Ticket donations have helped many volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters overcome these challenges. In the past, American Bank Center has donated tickets to the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney On Ice, Buck Days Rodeo, the Hammerheads, the Ice Rays, Cirque du Soliel and more.

Thanks to American Bank Center for their generous contributions!

Parenting is an important and rewarding experience, but as any parent can attest to, it comes with little to no training. Big Brothers Big Sisters realized this need and is now offering a new state-funded program focused on family skills training. These weekly sessions teach parents and children about family strengthening skills. Parents and children each have their own session specifically tailored to their group. Then, they gather to discuss and apply the skills they’ve learned-all the while spending quality time together.

After enjoying a free meal together, the parents and children go to their separate classes and learn how to handle various common family issues in a healthy manner. The post-lesson discussion brings parents and children back together to review what they learned and how they can apply it at home. Upon completion of the program, a graduation ceremony will take place complete with a special gift for each graduate.

This opportunity is especially beneficial for parents as they learn different coping mechanisms for stress and how to improve their parenting techniques. The establishment of interactive relationships between Big Brothers Big Sisters and the parents is an important goal because after all, the success of a Big/Little match depends heavily upon participation of the parents.

“The new parenting skills training benefits our families immensely,” says Joanna Villarreal, BBBS match support specialist. “The program also helps us establish more trust and a better connection with our parents.”

The training sessions are held every Saturday from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Hector P. Garcia Center. Big Brothers Big Sisters staff attended training on how to conduct the sessions according to specific curriculum. The inaugural class was held on November 6th and the program will continue for 14 weeks excluding holidays.

The participants in the Saturday, November 20th session will be given turkey and trimmings towards their own Thanksgiving generously donated by Thomas J. Henry and H.E.B. Dispatch and Transportation. No class is scheduled for November 27th.
