Hurricane Harvey Update from our Corpus Christi office

The devastation of Hurricane Harvey is still visible across our community. Trees have been uprooted, roofs have been lifted, fences knocked down, and plenty more wind damage to go around. After Hurricane Harvey hit the mainland, around 80% of Corpus Christi was without power. Some were without power for a couple of days and others for over a week.

With the loss of power comes many additionally unforeseen challenges for our Littles and their families who, in “normal” circumstances, barely make ends meet. Now with this natural disaster, they must choose between food, fixing leaky roofs and broken windows, buying school clothes and school supplies and paying other bills. Although the devastation of flooding wasn’t what we see in the Houston area, it still is devastating for the Littles and their families.

Fortunately, we suffered no loss of life, for which we are very grateful. Today, school is finally starting back and the staff and board of Big Brothers Big Sisters are back at work too. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep our program on track so children still have the magic of mentoring. We know that during these challenging times many volunteers are needed for cleaning up and getting our city back on track, but if you are looking for a more long term volunteer project post-Hurricane, give us a call at 361-888-8500.

Thank you to everyone who sent their prayers and support. It is truly appreciated.

Tony Elizondo, VP of Satellite Operations
