Local BBBS Agency Secures National Awards
The Big Brothers Big Sisters
of South Texas (BBBS) staff and CEO were honored with three major awards
during the 2006 BBBS of America National Conference held June 27 – 30 in
Indianapolis. The local agency won “large agency with the highest
revenue growth in 2005” and “large agency with the highest level of
sustained growth 2004, 2005”. The most esteemed honor was awarded to
BBBS of South Texas President & CEO Beth Myers when she was announced
as the CEO of the Year in the large agency category. There are currently
470 BBBS affiliates across the country. All agencies are eligible to
nominate their CEOs.
“It is such a tremendous honor to be recognized by Big Brothers Big
Sisters of America,” said Elizabeth Myers, president and CEO of BBBS of
South Texas. “These awards were achieved through the efforts of everyone
associated with our agency, including our volunteers, partners and donors.
I feel privileged to lead an incredible team of staff and board members
who care so passionately about making a difference in our community.”
Winners were selected by a nationwide panel of staff peers and volunteers
using criteria such as growth in number of children served, revenue
growth, and program quality.
Myers began her career with BBBS in 1996 as the director of program
services and was selected as its president & CEO in 1999. At the time
of her appointment as president & CEO the agency served 538 children.
Determined to serve more children, she doubled the operating budget of the
agency in only two and a half years, and is on target in 2006 to have
doubled the number of children served for the second time. The agency
served 1,920 children in 2005 and is working towards a goal is to match
7,000 children by 2010.
Golf Exchange Hosts
First Tournament to Benefit BBBS
The Golf Exchange teamed up
with 2005 Valero Texas Open Champion Robert Gamez to host its first annual
Charity Golf Tournament, which benefited Big Brothers Big Sisters of South
Texas. This four-person scramble was held on Friday, April 17 at the Hyatt
Hill Country Resort and Spa. Over 80 players came out and supported BBBS
as well as other local celebrities. In attendance were KSAT sportscaster
David Spears, boxer Jesse James Lejia and former Spurs player Johnny
Moore. Thank you to the Golf Exchange for working so hard to help support
the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
BBBS to Offer Mentoring Programs to Children in Laredo
Big
Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas has expanded its services to
include the children of Laredo. The agency’s expansion into Laredo was
made possible by receiving a $100,000 grant from the Texas
Department of Family and Protective Services to serve the area.
To help facilitate the program, Big Brothers Big Sisters will open a
satellite office and is in the process of hiring a program coordinator for
the area. The agency is also in the early stages of forming a satellite
resource board comprised of local leaders.
"We are thrilled to begin to serve the children in Webb County,"
said Elizabeth Myers, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas president
and CEO. "This grant will allow us to answer the need we’ve heard
from this area. We’re looking forward to serving the children in Laredo
and making an impact on their community."
