Mentoring Programs

Community-Based Program

In this program, volunteers usually make weekly visits during non-school hours. Agency statistics prove that kids in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program improve their school grades, peer and familial relationships and self-image. Volunteering is fun and easy!

  • Big Brother / Little Brother. About 90% of our waiting list is boys who have no father or male role model in their lives. A boy growing up can benefit greatly from the influence of a positive male who he can look up to and learn from.

  • Big Sister / Little Sister. Many young girls on the waiting list need the influence of a positive mature adult female who can provide a listening ear and show a girl how to grow into a successful and self-sufficient young woman.

  • Big Couple. Many couples have a desire to share their volunteer time. Married couples can volunteer together and be matched to Little Brother. Both adults act as a "Big" to the child, who receives positive relationship role modeling as well as support and guidance.

  • Big Sister / Little Brother. Due to the high number of boys on our Wait List needing a positive role model, we match Big Sisters with Little Brothers.

Site-Based Mentoring Programs

School-Based Program

In this program, a volunteer spends time with one child for about an hour each week. A volunteer would engage their "little" in a variety of activities, like: going over homework, watching the school play, eating lunch on the playground or reading together. A case manager provides support and activity ideas.

  • How does the school-based program work? Every volunteer will be matched with a particular child throughout the school year becoming his or her friend. School Mentors will meet with their assigned Little Brother or Little Sister for one hour a week during school hours at their school. Big Brothers Big Sisters staff will provide ongoing training and support and serve as a liaison between mentor and school.

  • Where are the schools?
Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters works with approximately 25-30 schools located around San Antonio. With so many schools to choose from it is usually easy to find a school 10-15 minutes away from any volunteer.

"Up 2 Us" Boys & Girls Club Program

In this program, the volunteer meets with their Little Brother or Little Sister at one of the Boys & Girls Club's branches. The "Big" spends an hour each week enjoying many activities together such as: swimming, basketball, foosball, computers, and boxing. This volunteer opportunity has the activities built-in without having to drive around town to find something to do. A case manager will provide support and additional activity ideas.

  • How does the Boys & Girls program work? Every volunteer will be matched with a particular child becoming his or her friend. "Bigs" will meet with their assigned Little Brother or Little Sister for 1½ hours a week after school hours at one of the clubs during the school year and during club operating hours in the summer. Big Brothers Big Sisters staff will provide ongoing training and support and serve as a liaison between mentor, parent, and club.

  • Where are the clubs?

High School "Bigs" Mentor Program

In our newest volunteer program, High School "Bigs" are matched to elementary aged students for a school year. High School "Bigs" come from several area high schools and meet one hour weekly in an after school group at the elementary school OR if they have a PALS program in place, volunteers meet during the school day.

The group follows a 12-week character improvement curriculum that includes  individual, small group, and large group activities. These fun activities help teach the following character traits:

  • Trustworthiness
  • Responsibility
  • Respect
  • Caring
  • Fairness
  • Citizenship

A Big Brothers Big Sisters staff person facilitates all the group meetings.

High school "Bigs" are not allowed to meet with their Little Brother or Little Sister outside of the group setting. High school students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the elementary school each week and parental permission is required from all students participating in the program.

Elementary students are referred from after school programs already in existence at the school. High school students are recruited from the neighboring high school. In this way, elementary school students can begin to learn about the high school they will be attending.

High school students receive service hours and certificates of appreciation. They develop confidence through mentoring and a sense of pride in their school and community.
