United Way VOYA

San Antonio Nonprofits Join Forces to Nominate “The Male Mentor” for Volunteer of the Year

On behalf of 14 mentoring partner organizations, Big Brothers Big Sisters nominated “The Male Mentor” for the United Way Volunteer of the Year Awards Education Service Award. The partnering organizations include those who work with male mentors:

  • 100 Black Men
  • Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • Boys and Girls Club
  • Boy with a Ball
  • CASA
  • Communities In Schools
  • Girls Inc.
  • Girls on the Run
  • HIS Bridgebuilders San Antonio
  • San Antonio Youth for Christ
  • Say Si
  • SA Youth
  • THRU Project

With so many wonderful men who step up to mentor boys in our community, we felt it was difficult to distinguish one person’s contribution over another. Instead, we honor all of our male mentors for the force for change in our community that you bring each day. With this nomination, we salute you!

The intention of the Education Service award is to recognize an individual or group whose volunteer efforts have significantly impacted education in our community. Research shows that the single most critical factor in whether or not children grow up successfully is whether or not they have caring adult role models in their lives. Thousands of children in San Antonio are living in cycles of poverty, incarceration, and abuse. Without a positive role model in their lives, these kids often fall into destructive cycles that threaten their potential. A mentor interrupts those cycles.
