About UsBackgroundBig Brothers Big Sisters began in 1904 when Ernest Coulter, a court clerk from New York City, began New York Big Brothers to help bring guidance into the lives of children caught up in the juvenile court system. This small organization would later become Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves primarily as a preventative program, working to keep at-risk children from becoming a statistic. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas has served the San Antonio community since 1978. Since that time, the agency has expanded to serve youth ages 5 - 18 in Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Hidalgo, Kerr, Nueces and Webb counties. In 2006, BBBS of South Texas served 2,082 youth in one-to-one mentoring relationships, an 8 percent increase in services from 2005. BBBS of South Texas has demonstrated significant growth in services for the past seven years. Mission StatementBig Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas’ mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships. Vision StatementBig Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas’ vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities for all. Big Brothers Big Sisters is reaching out to help the men in our community.
